Biography

From the book Fallen Saints

Sydney Stanley Morgan of Kingscote South Australia was born at Newport in the county of Monmouthshire, England and came to Australia with his parents at the age of nine.

He was a soft goods warehouseman after leaving school but immediately prior to enlistment on 23 November 1915 was working as a Gum contractor. Upon enlistment, he joined the 15th quota of reinforcements for the 9th Light Horse at Mitcham Camp but after successfully completing an NCO course in May 1916, was posted to A Company, 2nd Depot Battalion as a provisional sergeant.

At the end of June, he joined the 2nd quota of reinforcements for the 43rd Battalion and sailed for England aboard HMAT Ballarat on 12 August.  Although he had been a provisional sergeant and acting sergeant major in Australia on reaching England he reverted to his substantive rank and at the end of September joined the 11th Training Battalion.

In November, after completing a weapons course at the School of Musketry, Tidsworth he was promoted to substantive corporal and posted to the staff of the 11th Training Battalion as a weapons instructor.

At the beginning of June 1917 he embarked for France where on 11 June he was taken on the strength of the 43rd Battalion but within a fortnight was detached to the Corps School as an instructor.

Corporal Sydney Morgan joined the battalion in the field on 14 August, and was killed in action on 4 October 1917; he was 35 years of age.

When completing the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour circular, Sydney’s widow described him as a ‘splendid musician.’

At the time of his death he was pianist to the Pierrot’s troupe selected from the best talent in the Battalion. In England & France he acted for sometime as a musketry instructor. An officer described him as an excellent soldier & the best musketry instructor in his regiment. [i]
