Private Herbert (Ossie) Oscar Turnbull, 56th Battalion (Reg No-3254), miner from Brookstown, Wallsend, New South Wales and Lumsden Lane, Wallsend, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the 18th October 1946, age 62. CATHOLIC 2-52. 40.
Wounded in action - 26.9.1917 (GSW or shell wound left foot and leg, severe.) Amputated below knee.
Mr. Turnbull’s name has been inscribed on the Wallsend Soldiers' Memorial and the Wallsend Municipal & District Roll of Honor.
I submitted an application to DVA January 2022 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at the gravesite, and this was accepted March 2022.
I will post photos when official commemoration has been completed.
