Served in WW1 in france and Arabia with the 5th and 12th battalions. Joined the RSL on his return in 1919, he served as a sub branch officer then delegate to the No. 20 District Board of Victoria which he held for 28 years. he was elected a state Councillor of Victorian Branch in 1933 and in 1946 became Country Vice President. In 1956 he was elected State President of Victoria until he retires in 1964. For 22 years he served on the RSL Land Settlement Committee as member and Chairman. he served as a trusttee of the Victoriaan RSL; as a member of the War veterans Home Trust of Vicoria ; ANZAC Day Commenoration Council; trustee of the Shine of Remeberance and as Chairman of the Florance Nightingale Trust. In 1947 he was awarded a life membership for his services to the RSL. 1956 he was honoured by Her Majasty with a CBE a and again in 1963 when he was knighted. With his wife Frances he worked for the Returned Service League to help veterans, ill health of both parties was the only way this work was gradually brought to a close.
