Biography contributed by John Oakes

John HERON (Service Number 2128) was born on 31st August 1875 at Hendon, Durham England. He began working in the Railways as a moulder at Eveleigh in the Locomotive Branch on 28th October 1913. He was granted leave to join the AIF on 25th September 1914. He was 39-years-old when he enlisted.

He embarked (from Egypt) to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Forces on 5th April 1915. However, he was not in the field long before he was wounded. On 11th May 1915 he was wounded in action in the Dardanelles, in the Gallipoli Campaign. Although he survived long enough to reach the hospital ship ‘Dongala’ he died there and was buried at sea. He is commemorated at Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey.

His mother, who was listed as his next of kin, was given several personal items of his following his death, such as a pipe, a watch, and letters. She was also given the 1914/1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal in honour of her son’s service.
