Biographical details:
Herbert was the son of Johann Wilhelm Traeger and Johanna Hermine Elix. He carried out his basic training with 8 Coy 2nd Depot Battalion as a private from 16 October to 26 October 1916 and attended Signal School from 1 November to 31 December. Herbert then trained with the Field Artillery, Maribynong, Victoria, from 1 July 1917 to 9 February, prior to his unit embarking from Melbourne on board SS Indarra on 26 November 1917. He received 24 hours detention for failing to appear on parade on 14 May He was appointed a gunner with the 27th Battalion on 14 May. Herbert’s unit were sent to Suez, Egypt on 27 December and then to France on 23 September 1918, where he served out the remainder of the war. He was granted leave to study the Wool industry at Leeds University from 7 July to 8 August 1919, before returning to Australia on the Euripides on 3 September, disembarking on 18 October and was discharged on 19 November 1919(1).
Fruit Block Details:
Herbert Kintore Traeger took up the occupation of Block 635 of 11.25 acres on 1 February 1922. The block was on Mortimer Drive Monash, between blocks 100 and 102. The vines he planted included 2738 doradillos, 924 sultanas and 549 currants. He also worked blocks 711 and 685 from 1 April 1923 with Frank Lincoln Richardson. Herbert complained to the Royal Commission on the Soldier-Settler Scheme, that he was overcharged 76 pounds for the house that was built on his block(2).

Other Anecdotal Information:
Herbert married Winifred Edith Grimbly. They had one child, Junette Winifred, born in Monash on 28 June 1925. Junette attended Monash Primary School in 1931.
The Monash School Parents’ Committee appointed Herbert Treasurer in April 1936(3).The Methodist Guild was an important focal point for Herbert, as was his involvement with the Monash Fighting Forces Comforts Fund, which raised 12 pounds for the Air Raid Victims’ Fund in November 1940(4). Herbert was involved with the Committee Building Programme and served as the long-term treasurer of the Lone Gum/Monash Christmas Tree Celebrations Committee(5).
