Lieutenant Hubert Henry Carroll was a 24 year old single Surveyor and Draughtsman living at Ballarat when he enlisted. He was a member of the Australian Mining Corps Headquarters.
Hubert Carroll was one of the officers responsible for firing the blast under Hill 60 at Messines in June 1917.

Military Cross citation:
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed great gallantry and determination in leading parties across the open under intense fire in order to rescue several men who had been buried.'
