Robert Gordon Church was born in Adelaide, South Australia on the 3rd of July 1896. Before enlisting in WW1 he worked as a plumber and an ironworker.
His family members were his mother Elizebeth Ann Church and his brother who worked as an engineer in the war, Allen Jeffcott Church.
Robert Gordon Church enlisted in the first world war on the 6th of March 1916. He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on 11 April 1916.
He was wounded in action at Zourve Wood, 10 September 1917, and was sent to No 2 Stationary Hospital in Abbeville, he was sent back to the war after. On 27 July 1918, he was sent to No 7 Dublin Hospital after contracting influenza.
On 20 May 1919, he returned to Australia, while his brother returned earlier on 25 January 1919.
Church received the British War Medal and Victory Medal in recognition of his service.
