Son of the late Arthur Walter Johnson [died 1902] and Matilda (nee Strange) Johnson[died 1936] of Koongal, Rockhampton, Queensland. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 17 September 1915 and embarked from Brisbane for overseas on 31 January 1916 aboard HMAT "Wandilla" (A62). He died of wounds received in action, aged 36 years.
