Born at Gateshead-on-Tyne in England, Joseph Watson left England with his siblings in 1912 abord the ‘Irishman’ for Victoria Australia. He enlisted with his older brother Albert and brother-in-law William Robertson on 10 July 1915. Both brothers transferred to the 46th Battalion during March 1916. Joseph’s brother Albert was killed in action at Pozieres on the 14 August 1916. Joseph was wounded at Bullecourt 10 April 1917 but soon rejoined his unit. He was killed in action on 7 July 1917, 11 months after his brother.
