Biography contributed by Andrew Brown

James Cadell Falconer was a Victorian farmer, First World War veteran of the Australian Imperial Force.

Born in Prahran, Melbourne, he was the son of John James Falconer and Alice Heath Barnes. Before enlisting, Falconer worked as a farmer in the Mincha district of Victoria.

At the age of 28, he enlisted in the AIF in March 1915 and embarked for overseas service in June aboard HMAT 'Berrima' (A35) as a Driver with Field Artillery reinforcements. He served on the Western Front in France and Belgium, primarily with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, operating horse-drawn artillery. Despite being wounded and hospitalised on a couple of occasions between 1916 and 1918, he repeatedly returned to duty and was promoted through the ranks to Sergeant. For his service, he was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal.

Falconer returned to Australia in 1919 and was discharged from active service. In 1925, he married Thyra Margaret Uhd at the Methodist Church in Pascoe Vale.

James Cadell Falconer died on 22 February 1965 at Apsley, Victoria, aged 78. He is buried at Apsley Cemetery alongside his wife.
