Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

The Minmi Roll of Honour has 79 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.

The 10th name inscribed is Private Walter Bede Kennedy.

On the 11th August 1966, Private Walter Bede Kennedy, referred to as Bede, 1st Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery (Reg No-3069), labourer from Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales and Brisbane, Queensland (1939) and Lidcombe State Hospital & Home, Joseph Street, Lidcombe, N.S.W. (1963), was laid to rest at St. Matthew's Catholic Cemetery, N.S.W. (Windsor Catholic Cemetery, N.S.W.), age 75 years 2 months.

Walter had died on the 7th August 1966 at Windsor, N.S.W., no other details located. I don’t believe Walter ever married.

Born at Greta or Lochinvar, New South Wales on the 2nd June 1891 to John J, died? and Amy May Kennedy, died?

Walter enlisted on the 8th July 1915 with the 4th Battalion, age 24 years 1 month, at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A69 Warilda on the 8th October 1915.
Admitted to hospital 21.12.1915 (mumps).

Transferred to 1st Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery 9.3.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 25.3.1919.

Walter arrived home on the 14th May 1919, being discharged on the 9th July 1919.

Received all 3 War Medals.

Not officially commemorated.

Walter’s name has also been inscribed on the Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour.

I don’t know if it possible to place poppies at Walter’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.

Lest We Forget.
