James was the only son of James and Nora McInerney, of Maylands, Western Australia.
He was working as a clerk with the Associated Fruitgrowers in Hannan Street Kalgoorlie when he enlisted.
He was transferred to 51st Battalion shortly after arriving in Egypt in early 1916. The 51st Battalion made an attack onthe Fabeck Graben trench stronghold at Pozieres on the night of 14 August 1916. James was apparently serving with a Lewis Gun team and was last seen severely wounded.
