Hugh Calderbank was born in 1884 in Standish, Lancashire to Hugh and Elizabeth. He was educated at 1st Street Grammar School in Standish, and having spent five years in the Church Lads Brigade, he went on to become a bugler in the 5th East Surrey Volunteers before signing up for 10 years with the Royal Marine Light Infantry. He bought himself out of service in 1908 in order to emigrate to Australia where his father had been born. He arrived in Australia in 1911 and found employment as a tram motorman. He married, Sibbald and lived at 57 Shearer Street, Highgate Hill, Perth. On 9th September 1914, he enlisted in the AIF.

He and his mother are commemorated by Stained Glass Windows in the Church of St Margaret of Antioch in Stanford-le-Hope. [Here, Hugh is described as a Lieutenant] He is commemorated on the Stanford-le-Hope war memorial.
