His family (Mum and Dad) moved to WA during the 1890’s probably during the gold rush.

He trained at Claremont Teachers College and the University of Western Australia for his Bachelor of Arts Degree. His early Teaching appointments included: Hopetown; Karnup (Peel Estate Group Settlements); Mingenew; Brookton (1930-1935), Norseman (1936-1938), Bellevue (1939-1946); and Como (1946-1953)-His only position as a non-teaching principal. Retired in 1954. During WWII he was an active member of the Bellvue branch of the Air Raid Precaution Group (A.R.P.).

During World War 1 on the 24 May 1915 he enlisted in the 15th Field Ambulance and sailed to Egypt for training. A year later he went to France and was attached to the 58th battalion. In late 1917 he decided to leave the the Ambulance Corps and join the regular soldiers. He was selected for an officer’s course held at Cambridge (England) where became a lieutenant and joined the 59th Battalion. The battalion saw service in Northen France with battles at the Somme, Amiers, Villiers-Brettoneaux and the Hindenburg line.

After the war ended he studied french language at Sorbonne University in Paris. In December 1919 he sailed via India to Perth. As a consequence of his army service he changed the spelling of his surname from the Germanic “Griese” to the anglicised “Grice”. He also taught First Aid to his pupils at Bellvue.
