Edward James O'Reilly was one of many Australians who simply went missing on 25 April 1915, their bodies lost amongst the scrub and gullies of the broken hills and ridges of Anzac. He was first reported killed or a prisoner of war in October 1915. It was September 1917 before another enquiry confirmed him to be killed in action on the 25 April 1915, and his next of kin advised him of such. The news first appeared in the Ballarat newspapers during October 1917.
Edward's brother 4280 Private Patrick Henry O'Reilly 14th Battalion AIF was captured by the Germans at Bullecourt and spent most of his war as a prisoner of war. By late war the boys parents were deceased and Patrick became next of kin and recipient of the medals awarded to his brother Edward.
