78 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 17th October 1945, Lance Corporal Frederick Hunter Millard, 18th Battalion (Reg No-263), grocer (Singleton Co-operative Society) and ironmonger from John Street, Singleton, New South Wales and Porcher Street, Merewether, N.S.W. and 3 Mary Street, Merewether, N.S.W., father of Bryan Frederick Millard who served in the Royal Australian Navy, Service Number 27272 (born 28.9.1925, Singleton, N.S.W., from 3 Mary Street, Merewether, N.S.W., enlisted 29.11.1944, discharged 6.2.1946, died?, not officially commemorated), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 57. CATHOLIC 2-57. 137.

Born at Singleton, New South Wales on the 18th July 1888 to Albert and Frances Sara Millard (Simmons); husband of Margaret Madeline (Madge) Millard nee Callaghan (married 1923, West Maitland, N.S.W., died 12.9.1977, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 86, 32 years a widow, sleeping here), Fred enlisted on the 16th February 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board Transport A40 Ceramic on the 25th June 1915.

Wounded in action - 27.8.1915 (bomb wound, knee), 10.10.1917 (GSW back, right shoulder & right thigh).

Admitted to hospital 19.10.1915 (epilepsy).

Granted furlough from the 18.1.1918 to the 1.2.1918.
Fred returned home on the 29th January 1919 (1915 Leave), being discharged on the 24th March 1919.

Mr. Millard’s name has been inscribed on the Singleton & District War Memorial, Singleton Superior Public School Roll of Honour and the Singleton Methodist Church of Australasia First World War Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Fred’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
