Cecil George Joseph GUMMOW was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1898

His parents were George GUMMOW & Sarah Emma SHARP who married in Victoria in 1896

Cecil married Lilian WALTERS in Victoria in 1916

He first enlisted on 25th April, 1916 in Melbourne (SN 2665) but was discharged as medically unfit on 27th November, 1916

He re-enlisted in Sydney on 2nd March, 1917 (SN 2333) and embarked from Sydney on the HMAT Port Sydney on 9th May 1917 with the 12th Light Horse Regiment, 18th Reinforcements

Cecil died on 14th August, 1918 in the 14th Australian General Hospital in Port Said, Egypt from dystentry & heart failure

He is buried in the Port Said War Cemetery and his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Victorian Railways WW1 Roll of Honour

          Inscription on his headstone reads:

       "LOVED ONLY SON OF G. & S. GUMMOW -

                 BROTHER OF DORRIE"
