Ernest William Baghurst was born in 1886 in Swindon, Wiltshire, England. His father was Charles Baghurst and Ann Susan Fawlk. As a young man, he moved to South Australia to build his adult life. By the start of the First World War, he was living at 41 New Street, Queenstown, a suburb of Adelaide. He worked as a fitter. When he enlisted, he stated he was single and identified as a Methodist Christian.
On 20th August 1915, Ernest enlisted in Adelaide. He was assigned to the 3rd Field Ambulance, yet he was later recorded as serving with the 5th Field Ambulance during the war. After training in Australia, Ernest left Sydney on 11 January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda (A30) for Egypt
Baghurst was transferred to the 5th Field Ambulance and then proceeded to France from Egypt arriving in 23rd March 1916.
In February 1917 he was evacuated sick with a septic toe and spent a couple of weeks in hospital before rejoining his unit. He was temporarily detached to the 19th Battalion during May 1917 before rejoining the Field Ambulance again. Ernest took two weeks leave in July and went to the UK. Upon his returned he was temporarily detached to the 7th Field Ambulance.
In August 1918 he returned to the 5th Field Ambulance and was granted from 21st August - 8th September, once again he travelled to the UK. He became ill with a fever in October 1918 and after initial treatment in France was diagnosed with Pneumonia and sent to England to recover.
He returned to Australia on the HT Dongola and disembarked in Port Adelaide 13th May 1919. He was discharged 31st August 1919. He married Flora Emily Hunt on 10 December 1921. Together, they raised three children. In his later years, he lived in Pasadena, a suburb of Adelaide.
Ernest lived until the age of 68, passing away on 6 June 1955. He was buried at Centennial Park Cemetery.
