Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Charles Morrison Pickering served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. He first served as a Private S.N. 185 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry (Boer War) and second as a Driver S.N. 1694 7th Battery Field Artillery Brigade 3 rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant at the time of his discharge.

Charles married Mary Ann Haworth on 27 Feb 1900. In a letter to his Commanding Officer dated 4 Dec 1915 (after reverting to rank of Gunner) he claimed a increase of separation allowance to be paid to his wife noting she was supporting their 7 children under the age of 16 at the time. His WW1 service seen him pass through Gallipoli and France. (source National Archives Australia: Boer War Dossier and WW1 service records).
