He was 23 and the son of James and Annie Paul McNeil, of The Beeches, East Bay, Dunoon, Scotland.

He is remembered on the Dunoon War Memorial as Harry. He is one of 7 Australian Great War casualties honoured on the Dunoon War Memorial. There are also three New Zealand casualties honoured on this memorial.

Henry Paul McNEIL (Service Number 4239A) was, born at Merry Hill, Glasgow (UK) in February 1893 . He worked in the traffic branch of the NSW Railways but this was probably only for a short time.

He enlisted at Holdsworthy, NSW, in August 1915. He gave his ‘trade or calling’ on his Attestation Papers as being a ‘Butcher’. His next of kin was his father who was still living in Scotland. He was first in the 13th Reinforcements to the 4th Battalion. 

He left Australia through Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Aeneas’ on 20th December 1915 and reached Egypt where he was allotted to the 2nd Battalion as a Driver. He embarked for overseas through Alexandria in late March 1916, reaching the Western Front through Marseilles. At this time, he was allotted to the 1st Machine Gun Company as a Private.

He was killed in action on 9th November 1916. He has no known grave. He is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Picardie, France.
