Alfred Lewis Groom STEVENSON (Service Number 3479) was born in Redfern on 27th April 1894. He was the son of a railway fireman (later driver). He moved to Penrith when his father was transferred there. He was educated at the Penrith Public School. He joined the NSW Government Railways as an apprentice fitter at Penrith in February 1911. In April 1915 when his apprenticeship almost complete he was transferred to Eveleigh. On completion his services were terminated, as was usual at the time. However, he was re-employed as a tradesman fitter the following week. In May 1915 he was transferred to Junee. In July he enlisted in the AIF at Liverpool.
He was allotted to the 11th Reinforcements of the 13th Battalion. He was embarked from Sydney in October 1915. In Egypt in March 1916 he was transferred to the 45th Battalion. He had a few days in hospital in May with Influenza. In June he was sent to France. He was appointed Lance Corporal in January 1917. He had a week at a rest station in February with Influenza again before he re-joined his unit at the end of the month. In March he was promoted to Corporal and in June to Sergeant.
On the night of 10th June 1917 he was killed in action in an unsuccessful attack on a German blockhouse in the Oostaverne Line at Messines (Official History, Vol.IV, p.673). He was buried at a map reference in the vicinity of Messines, but after the war the grave could not be located. He is commemorated with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
A war pension was granted to his mother.
