Freeman was variously known as John Freeman or John Isaac Freeman although he was born Ignatius John Freeman. His older brother, 2856 Pte. Thomas Freeman 7th Battalion AIF, was killed in action 23 August 1918. They were the sons of John Joseph and Maria Freeman of Hobart, Tasmania.
Freeman was awarded a Military Medal as a stretcher bearer, ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the operations east of Ypres on 11th October, 1917, when acting as a stretcher bearer, especially in the evening during the heavy bombardment by the enemy of the line of evacuation from Zonnebeke to Railway Dump. Private Freeman courageously on several occasions carried in wounded through their fire and continued to do so until the whole number had been brought to safety. His bravery was a magnificent example to his comrades and his cheerfulness under heavy shell fire was beyond all praise.’
He returned to Australia during 1919.
