Stanley Clarence Gant
Stanley enlisted May 17, 1916 at Morphettville, South Australia.
He arrived at Messines, River Douve, France 3:40am July 31, 1917.
Stanley was wounded in action outside Warneton, France (schrapnel wound) July 31, 1917. He was hospitalised and returned to duty Nov. 8, 1917.
He was later gassed by Mustard gas at Bois l' Abbe, France on May 26th. 1918 when the Germans lobbed some 9,000 gas shells between the hours of 3am and 6am into the area causing 50 enlisted casualties and 1 officer in 43rd. Battalion. Stanley was hospitalised due to coughing and returned home, unfit for active duty.
Stanley was awarded the Military Medal (List 247) for bravery in the field on October 19, 1917 in France. A point of interest; the medal was initially wrongly awarded to his brother Alfred who was killed in action and had to be returned and correctly awarded to Stanley. This would have been a terrible situation for their family to deal with having lost Alfred.
He was discharged, unfit for duty, May 17, 1919 at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide.
Stanley is buried in Light Oval, West Terrace and his brother Alfred's memorial has been added to his headstone.
