Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of four brothers to serve in WWI, Private Sydney Price Gordon (Service No:727) enlisted in the AIF on 5 July 1916 with 22/3 Light Horse Regiment, and was attached to No 2 Squadron Australian Flying Corps (AFC) on 25 October 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Plymouth on board HMAT A38 Ulysses (graded 1st Air Mechanic). Private Gordon served in France a a T/Corporal with 69th and 3rd Squadrons, and was granted leave for educational purposes on two occasions - in 1917 to attend East London College (Aeronautics) and in May 1919 to attend University Tutorial College in London. Private Gordon embarked from England for Adelaide on 18 December 1919 on board HT Konigan Luise (T/Corporal Education Services), and was attached to 3rd Australian Flying Corps at Discharge on 19 March 1920.

Third of six children, Sydney was born in Hammond, South Australia in 1889 to George Carlyle Gordon (b1861 at Beautiful Valley, South Australia) and Amy Susannah Howe (b1866 at Chinkford, Gilbert, South Australia). George was a Blacksmith in 1894 when he and Amy married in Hammond - living there and in Carrieton and Balaklava, where they raised their family and George was a Blacksmith and Inventor (winnowing and grain cleaning machine). By 1912 the family had settled in Port Lincoln, where George was a Blacksmith (Gordon and Son).

Sydney worked as a Blacksmith and Mechanic with D Davies Port Lincoln, before enlisting in the AIF in 1916. Following his Discharge, Sydney joined the Education Department as a Teacher and Instructor (Technical High School), and in 1925 in Adelaide married Florence Olive Pascoe (b1899 in Adelaide, South Australia). Sydney and Florence settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Sydney remained with the Education Department until his death in 1949. Florence died in 1989.
