Great Sydney Station Honour Board
Harold McLean AVERY, (Service Number 867) was born on 15 April 1891 near the town of Maclean as is perhaps recorded in his name, though the spelling is different. He commenced work for the NSWGR&T as a junior porter at Lismore and then began a career in the locomotive branch as a cleaner, becoming a fireman in 1912. Soon after the outbreak of the war he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces. He noted in his attestation papers that he had spent three years with the Railway Rifle Club. He enlisted at Lismore on 18 September and embarked from Melbourne on 22 December 1914.
His papers show that he ‘Proceeded to join M.E.F (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) Gallipoli Peninsula 12.5.15’ so he did not take part in the landings on Anzac Day itself. He received a bullet wound to his foot and was evacuated in May but returned in July
He was reported missing at Gallipoli on 8 August 1915. It was eight months later at a Court of Enquiry held at Serapeum, Egypt that it was confirmed that he had been killed in action on 8 August at the Battle of Lone Pine and the chaos was such that details of the many deaths which occurred over several days were never known and bodies never recovered.
Avery has no known grave and his name is included on the Lone Pine Memorial.
