Charles Fletcher PORTEOUS was born on 25th Sept. 1875 in Carngham, Victoria
His parents were John Dempsey PORTEOUS and Catherine Rosetta FLETCHER
Charles married Rosetta Elizabeth FLETCHER in 1899 in Victoria
He saw previous service in the CMF (65th Infantry) before enlisting on 6th July, 1916 as a Sapper with the Tunnelling Companies December 1916 Re-inforcements. Service no. 6127. They left Melbourne on 25th October 1916 on the HMAT Ulysses and arrived in Plymouth UK on 28th December 1916
He returned to Australia on 2nd March, 1920 on the ship Ceramic
He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal
On 16th November 1939 at the age of 65 he joined the Australian Army - Service No. V82104 and served in the Royal Australia Engineers 5th Australian Workshop & Parks Company as a Corporal (Citizens Military Forces). Charles died of natural causes while in camp on 19th June, 1941
