Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

George Rennie’s father died the same year he was born and he was raised by his mother Ann Euphemia Rennie. Mrs. Rennie received two tragic telegrams within a week during October 1918, informing her of two sons being killed in action within days of one another.

George’s brother, 3628 Pte Norman Craib Rennie, 10th Light Trench Mortar Battery, had been killed in action, 27 September 1918 and George was killed at Montbrehain 5 October 1918, in the last fight of the AIF on the Western Front.

Even more tragic was the fact that George Rennie was an Anzac, having served at Gallipoli with the 24th Battalion AIF. He was promoted to Corporal in 1916, Sergeant 1917 and 2nd Lieutenant in 1918.

Prior to enlisting he was attached to the staff of the Bank of Australasia, at the Fish Creek branch, having previously joined the bank at Bairnsdale.

A third brother 3903 Sergeant Alexander Rennie 59th Battalion AIF was wounded in the leg at Fromelles and returned to Australia.
