Private Alec Sloyle (correct spelling Stoyel) Nelson (Service No:963) gave his age as eighteen and half when he enlisted on 8 February 1915 - born on 26 September 1900, he was under age. Private Nelson was attached to 10th Light Horse Regiment on 26 September 1915 when he embarked from Fremantle for Gallipoli on board HMAT A20 Honorata. WiA at Anzac on 29 August 1915, Private Nelson was hospitalised in Malta and on 14 February 1916 was transferred to 51st Infantry Battalion. On 28 November 1916 he embarked for France with the 51st Infantry Battalion on board SS Henrietta. Whilst serving in France, Private Nelson was accidentally wouded - bayonet wound - in April 1917 and in September 1917 transferred to 1st Australian General Hospital. Private Nelson embarked for the RTA on 2 January 1919 on board HT Berrima and was Discharged on 4 April 1919.

Born in 1900 at Midland Junction in WA, Alec was the seventh of twelve children of Alfred (Alf) Nelson (b1864 in Roxburghshire, Scotland) and Amy Kate Stoyel (b1871 in Devon, England). Alf was a Coach Body Maker in Scotland when he immigrated in 1884, and Amy immigrated in 1889, arriving in Brisbane QLD on board the Merkara. Alf (a Coach Builder) and Amy married in Brisbane QLD in 1890 and by 1892 were living in Victoria - firstly in Melbourne and then at the El Dorado Mines. In 1895 Alf and Amy moved their family to Midland Junction in WA where Alf was a Coach Builder. The family then settled at Leederville in Perth WA and Alf - a Carpenter - travelled for many years to the country for work.

Alec was working in Perth as a Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915 - before he turned fifteen years. Following his Discharge in 1919, Alec was a Mechanic in Perth in 1924 when he married Eileen Minnie Gibbons (b1896 at Yalgoo, WA) - Eileen was living at Narrogin. By the 1930s Alec and Eileen were settled in Kalgoorlie WA where Alec was a Garage Proprietor and by 1943 was working as a Plant Operator. Eileen died in 1952 - Alec continued living in Kalgoorlie and worked as a Truck Driver before moving to Perth where he died in 1971.
