Biography contributed by Paul Trevor

Sergeant Mervyn A. Rankine was granted an extension of leave for 3 months prior to returning to Australia to complete a period of non-military employment (NME). During this period of time Sergeant Rankine undertook an Accountancy course at the YMCA George Williams College in London.

Whilst researching the personal particulars of Sgt. Mervyn A. Rankine in the South Australian Genealogy Records of Births, Deaths and Marriages I soon discovered that the closes match I could find was a Mervyn Andrew RANKIN who was born in 2 January 1897, which also match the details for his next-of-kin. The same name , Meryvn RANKIN was also the closes match I was able to find for a a person dying in Adelaide in 1985. Further searches could not locate a history for a Mervyn Andrew Rankine who had previously served with Australian Imperial Force during the First World War.

There is also an anomaly with his Attestation Paper and Service Record, in which there is a difference in the hand writing and then the signature. I could only imagine due to his age and/or the disapproval of his parents that he has had someone else fill out the paperwork for him and he has made the slight change in his surname to confuse the authorities.
