Private Norman Phillip Francis (Service No:5020) enlisted in the AIF on 4 January 1916 and embarked with 26th Infantry Battalion on 4 May 1916 from Brisbane bound for England on board HMAT Seeang Choon A49. Private Francis served in France, where he was WiA on two occasions - 14 November 1916 (GSW to chest), and 11 April 1918 (GSW right shoulder) - and was invalided to England on both occasions. Private Francis transferred to 2nd Machine Gun Battalion as a Driver on 15 September 1918 and was a Private attached to 2nd Machine Gun Battalion when he embarked for the RTA on 4 June 1919 on board HT Mahir. Private Francis was Discharged on 4 September 1919.

Fourth of nine children, Norman was born in 1893 in Laidley, QLD to Jacob Francis (b1862 in Wagga Wagga, NSW) and Elizabeth (Annie) Ann McBean (b1864 in Ipswich, QLD). Jacob and Annie married in 1885 in Ipswich, QLD and lived in Ipswich, Ma Ma Creek, Grandchester, Roma and Laidley where James was a Blacksmith.

Norman worked as a Carpenter and Cabinetmaker in Laidley, QLD where in 1923 he married Christina Elliott Gardner (b1895 in Roxburghshire, Scotland) - Christina had immigrated in 1913 with her parents and siblings, arriving in Rockhampton, QLD on board the Shropshire and settling in Laidley, QLD.

Norman and Christina settled in Ipswich, QLD where Norman worked as a Coachbuilder for QGR. He served in WWII (Lieutenant; Service No:Q227518). Christina died in 1961 and Norman in 1975.
