Son of William Oates and Elizabeth Jane nee Beard of 'Arthurleigh', Georina Street, Sandringham, Victoria. On page 11 of his Attestation paper there is a letter dated 1921 from Ellen Crossley of Commercial Road, Newport, Monmouthshire, England stating that she was his real mother.
Step brother of Arthur William Oates who returned to Australia on 26 May 1919 having served with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade.
