Biography contributed by Sydney Technical High School
Russell Keith Pascoe was born on 28 June 1897 in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, to William and Susie Pascoe. In 1906, his sister Mildred Grace Frew Pascoe was born after the family moved to Mosman, NSW. The family experienced financial hardship, with his father declaring bankruptcy in 1911, but Russell nevertheless gained a solid education. He attended Mosman Public School, Fort Street Public School, and Sydney Technical College, where his attendance records show only three days absent in 1913. To assist with the family’s circumstances, Russell worked as a photographer while still at school.
On 18 June 1915, just ten days before his eighteenth birthday, Russell enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). He embarked from Sydney on HMAT Runic A54 on 9 August 1915 with the 19th Infantry Battalion. Arriving late in the Gallipoli campaign, he fought in the Battle of Hill 60 and was later involved in the defence of Pope’s Hill until the evacuation in December.
After training in Egypt, Russell was sent to the Western Front in France. He fought at the Battle of Pozières during the Somme campaign, where he was wounded by a gunshot to the scalp on 27 July 1916. After treatment at Wharncliffe War Hospital, he returned to duty in September 1916. In March 1917, he was promoted to Corporal but was again wounded, this time in the neck during the defence of Lagnicourt. He returned to the battalion in May 1917.
Russell was promoted to Sergeant in July 1917 and soon after was involved in the Third Battle of Ypres in Belgium. On 21 September 1917, during the Battle of Menin Road, he was killed in action at the age of 20. Like many of his comrades, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres. He is also remembered on the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour in Canberra, the Sydney Technical High School Roll of Honour, and the Mosman “With the Colours” Pictorial Honour Roll.
