Son of James Joseph Underwood and Helen Mary Underwood nee Bridger of Warbarton Road, East Camberwell, Victoria.

Brother of Charles Edward Underwood who returned to Australia on 22 September 1919 having served with the 5th Machine Gun Battalion and Leo Underwood who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 while serving with the 22nd Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Panel 23 of the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.

Husband of Elsie Susan S. Underwood nee Huse of Seymour Grove, Camberwell, Victoria. James and Elsie married during 1914c in Victoria
