From How We Served
The final resting place for; - 2214 & V82219 Private Frederick Ewen (aka Ewan) Wright of Narrandera, New South Wales and Daylesford, Victoria, who prior to his enlistment on the 15th of April 1915 had been employed as a blacksmith.
Frederick was allocated to reinforcements for the 2nd Battalion 1st AIF and was embarked for Egypt and further training on the 16th of June. By the 6th of August, Frederick ad joined his Battalion in the trenches of Gallipoli, just in time for the August Offensive, and during this, three days later, he was being evacuated for hospitalisation having sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.
Sent back to Mudros Island, for his recovery, Frederick returned to his Unit in the field on the 24th of December. With the end of the Gallipoli campaign, Frederick was returned too Egypt on the 28th of December.
Following further training he was with his Battalion when it was shipped to France, where they were disembarked on the 28th of March 1916.
Aside slight bouts of sickness which would see Frederick hospitalized and recovering after each, Fredericks service in the trenches of France and Flanders would be continuous until he was wounded in action on a second occasion on the 11th of August 1918 by shrapnel wounds to the foot.
Again, following his recovery and time spent as a convalescent, Frederick re-joined his Battalion on the 19th of November 1918.
With the War now over, Frederick was sent to England from where he would begin his repatriation back to Australia, embarking for home on the 27th of September 1919. Having arrived back in Australia, Frederick received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 9th of January 1920.
With the outbreak of the Second World War, Frederick again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces on the 7th of December 1939, and was accepted for full time duty.
Taken on strength with the 12th Garrison Battalion, and his service again on Home Service would be continuous until he was evacuated due to sickness o the 115th Australian General Hospital (Heidelberg) on the 22nd of March 1945 due to heart problems.
Whilst still a patient Frederick succumbed to cardiac failure on the 1st of March 1945 at the age of 47.
Following Fredrick’s premature death whilst again in the service of the Australian Military Forces, and having been wounded trice in action during the ‘Great War’, Private Frederick Wright was officially laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
