The youngest of six children, Ray was born in 1892 in Perth WA to Dr Edward (Ned) James Ambrose Haynes (b1854 in Maitland, NSW) and Theresa Margaret Mooney (b1852 at sea on board the Java en route to NSW). Ned (a Medical Practitioner) and Theresa married in 1876 in Sydney NSW. Ned had started his medical studies at the Sydney Infirmary, and in 1886 was at London Hospital when he was awarded membership of the Royal Surgeons and made a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians. Returning to Sydney, in 1887 Ned was in charge of the smallpox hospital in Manly  and then appointed Government Doctor in Gunnedah - where he was also elected Mayor. In 1891 Ned and Theresa were in Perth, WA where Ned was a Medical Practitioner, member of the Perth City Council and Captain with the WA Defence Forces - Perth Mounted Rifles.

Ray completed a Bachelor of Medicine at The University of Sydney in 1915, and in 1916 in Sydney married Helen (Nellie) Shanahan Murray (b1891 in Sydney, NSW).
