20 Aug 1917: Honoured Military Medal, 'The Winter Offensive' - Flers/Gueudecourt winter of 1916/17, 'In the operations north east of GUEUDECOURT on night 4th/5th February, 1917, Private BUSHELL was in charge of a Lewis gun. He was stationed on the left of "A" Company and was fiercely attacked by enemy bombers. With great coolness, although bombs were falling around, he opened fire on the enemy advancing in support of the attackers. He climbed up to a high point after the men in the open had been dealt with and fired down into the trench that was concealing the enemy's bomb section. All his crew but one were knocked out but he remained on his gun for 21 hours without relief. His coolness and bravery were exceptional. Owing to the cold he had a good deal of trouble with his gun but he always quickly put the stoppages right. He was exposed to very heavy shell fire.'
