William (Willie) was the youngest of four children of John Heffernan (b 1862) and Mary Buckley (born 1864 in Toodyay, Western Australia). William was a Jockey when he enlisted in the AIF in October 1915, serving as a Private (Service No: 1872) with the Camel Corps and 10th Light Horse Regiment. He was WIA in 1917, and was Discharged in 1918.

Older brother Michael (Mick) also served in WWII in the AIF as a Private (Service No: 4619).

William remained single and was a Horse Trainer in Belmont, Perth WA until his death in 1954.
