28 Sep 1918: Honoured Military Cross, 'For conspicuous gallanry and devotion to duty at Bellicourt, on 28th-29th September, 1918; he, in conjunction with another officer, acted as F.O.O. He maintained practically uninterrupted communications throughout his group head-quarters, and in the course of the operation obtained and transmitted information of the greatest value and importance, not only to the artillery, but to the infantry as well.' Lionel Harrison Rankine was born on 31 Aug 1885 in Hammond, South Australia. He is the son of George Carlile Gordon and Amy Susannah Howe. [1]

Lionel married Elizabeth Mary Shannon 30 Sep 1913 at the Congregation Church, Sedan, South Australia. [2] Elizabeth passed away age 26 on 4 Nov 1914 in Tungkillo, South Australia. [3]

Lionel was 30 years of age (widower with no children) when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 20 Sep 1915. He embarked on HMAT Botanist A59 from Adelaide on 26 Apr 1916 as part of the 16th reinforcement of the 3rd Light Horse Regiment. He served in the 3rd Light Horse and the 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade.
In June 1919 Lionel was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry and devotion to duty at Bellicourt, on 28-29th Sept 1918. [4] [5] [6] [7]

Lionel married Margaret Jenkins on 10 Jul 1919 at the Parish Church of Llansamlese, Glamorganshire, Wales. [8]

Lionel passed away age 60 on 9 May 1946 in Keswick, South Australia [9] and was buried in North Road Cemetery in Nailsworth, South Australia. [10]
