Hugh enlisted in Camperdown, Victoria, Australia on 18 Aug 1914, with a history of having served in The Royal Engineers in Glasgow for four years 1909-1913. He joined the 8th Battalion AIF, 2nd Infantry Brigade, B Company. His next of kin was his Mother - Elizabeth MacKenzie of 45 Dalnair Street, Overnewton, Glasgow.

Mackenzie was killed 8 May 1915 at Cape Helles, the Dardanelles: "while trying to bring back a wounded man, and having been advised to lie down, he was seen to persist then to be shot in the stomach and killed". He was 26 years of age.
