George Patrick Davis was the son of Herbert and Ann Davis. Born in 1881 he was christened Georgius Patricius Davis. One of his mates stated he called himself ‘the old original G.P.’. His parents both passed away during 1912 so he gave his next of kin as his brother, Frank Davis of Leederville, Western Australia. Another brother, 6038 Pte. Septimus Augustus Davis 11th Battalion AIF was killed in action near Bullecourt on 10 April 1917.
George was reported missing after the attack on Mouquet Farm during September 1916, in which the 51st Battalion suffered very heavy casualties. Several eye witnesses said they saw him killed by snipers near Mouquet Farm.
George’s remains were found by the Imperial War Graves Commission during 1923 and his identity disc was recovered and sent to the oldest brother, Frank.
Another brother, 2807 Pte. Herbert William Davis 44th Battalion was badly wounded in the leg near Ypres during October 1917 and was sent home to Australia with a fractured leg a few months later.
