Castle Donington - The village or market town and civil parish of Castle Donington is situated at the north-western edge of Leicestershire close to the Derbyshire border and is on the edge of the National Forest.

Ernest was born  in Castle Donnington and was the son of Joseph, a driller and Sarah Winfield née Dakin of 1 Kirkwhite Ave, Long Eaton, Derbyshire. Joseph was born in 1859 in Castle Donington.

Sarah Dakin was born in 1861 also in Castle Donington; they were married in 1878, marriage was recorded in the Derby Registration District.

They went on to have 11 children : Henry b1881 Castle Donington, Ernest b1884 Castle Donington, William b1885 Basford, Fred b1887 Basford, Albert b1889 Bulwell, Arthur b1893 Bulwell, Horace b1895 Bulwell, Gilbert b1899 Bulwell and Eva b1903 Long Eaton. In 1911 the family was living at 1 Kirkwhite Ave, Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

His brother Lance Corporal William Winfield, 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers, died of wounds on 5th September 1918. He is buried in La Kreule Military Cemetery, Hazebrouck.

In memoriam published 5th September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WINFIELD. – In loving memory of our dear sons and brothers, Lce.-Cpl. W. Winfield, Royal Fusiliers, died of wounds September 5th, 1918; also Pte. E. Winfield, A.I.F., killed in action July 19th, 1916. Bulwell. We loved you in life, you are dear to us still, but in grief we must bend to God's holy will. The sorrow is great, the loss hard to hear, but angels, dear sons, will guard you with care. – Father, mother, brothers, and sisters.”

The Winfield brothers are remembered on the Nottingham (Bulwell) - Parish of St Mary the Virgin and All Souls War Memorial.
