Horace Roe Shillabeer was born at Second Valley, South Australia on the 11th of November 1881. His father was Samuel Roe Shillabeer while his mother was Eliza Lewis Shillabeer. He was a brother to 8 siblings: Eliza Sophia Shillabeer, Sophia Ellen Shillabeer Grundy, Florence Maria Shillabeer, Samuel Andrew James Shillabeer, John Down Shillabeer, Percival Sidney Shillabeer, Edwin D’Arcy Shillabeer and Albert Leopold Shillabeer.
Before the war, Horace worked as a farm labourer and did not go to school. On the 16th of April in 1916, he embarked as a private on the Royal Mail Ship Orontes in Melbourne. He then got enlisted to go to war on the 25th of April 1916. At the time, he was 34 years old and 4 months, his height was 5 feet and 10 inches which is 177.8 cm, he weighed 135 lbs and that’s 61.24 kg. His chest measurement was 34-36 inches which is 86-91.44 cm, his skin tone was medium, his eyes were hazel, his hair was brown, and his religion denomination was the Church of England.
Horace joined the war as a private in the 8th Machine Gun Company on the 16th of August 1916. During the war, Horace was wounded but he remained on duty. This happened on the 19th of September 1917. That same year, Horace got promoted from a Private to a Corporal. During the war on the 27th of February in 1918, he was admitted to hospital sick from ptomaine poisoning. He recovered and returned to battle on the 13th of April 1918. The same year, on the 20th of May, he was promoted to a Sergeant because of his efforts throughout the war. The war ended months after, and he departed back to Melbourne on the 5th of August 1919.
On the 10th of April 1937, he married to his wife, Dorothy Mary Nash Shillabeer. At the age of 91, Horace Roe Shillabeer died of old age. His body was buried at the North Road Church of England Cemetery in Nailsworth, South Australia.
