Private John (Jack) Munro Hartland (Service No:57612) served with the AIF in France. Enlisting in December 1917, Private Hartland was attached to 4th QLD Reinforcements when he embarked for active service overseas, and served with 9th Infantry Battalion and 4th Australian Service Coy Corps. Private Hartland was hospitalised for Mumps, Influenza and Laryngitis during his service in France. He was a T/Driver attached to 1st Division Train when he was Discharged in 1920.

Born in 1896 in Toowoomba QLD, Jack was the fourth of ten children of Benjamin (Ben) Joseph Hartland (b1862 in Staffordshire, England) and Eleanor May Munro (b1866 in Moonie on the Darling Downs in QLD). Ben emigrated in 1879, arriving in Brisbane QLD on board the Arthurstone. Ben and Eleanor married in Toowoomba, QLD in 1890 and settled on the Darling Downs at Jondaryan, where they raised their family and Ben was a Farmer.

Jack worked as a Labourer in Jondaryan and in 1917 he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge in 1920, he returned to Jondaryan, QLD and in 1924 at Oakey on the Darling Downs, QLD Jack married Alice Cole Ambrose (b1899 in Mereweather NSW) - Alice was living with her parents and siblings at Brymaroo on the Darling Downs by 1913. Jack and Alice settled in Brymaroo where Jack was a Farmer. In the  1930s the couple remained in Jondaryan where Jack was a Labourer. Alice died in 1938 and Jack served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:Q141322) in WWII. He relocated to Toowoomba in the late 1940s and worked as a Labourer. Jack died in 1966.
