From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery.
Another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, resting peacefully but anonymously at Sandgate Cemetery.
93 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 13th March 1928, Private Justin A Nolan, 55th Battalion (Reg No-2509), labourer from 29 or 31 Fern Street, Islington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 39. CATHOLIC 1-B Com. 153.
Born at Islington, New South Wales on the 1st June 1888 to Thomas and Winifred Nolan, Justin enlisted May 1915 with the 3rd Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 27.9.1915 (dysentery).
Captured at Fleurbaix or Laventie, officially reported Prisoner of War 20.7.1916, Battle of Fromelles. He was reported as Prisoner of War in Germany 10/1916
and that Justin repatriated to England 1/1919.
Justin returned home May 1919, being discharged on the 25th June 1919.
Mr Nolan’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1).
I located Justin resting in an unmarked grave, long forgotten, so April 2020 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore honour and dignity to Mr Nolan.
Lest We Forget.
