George William Gwynne, born on the 28th of November 1883, was the only child of Mary Ann Dew (who was his next of kin) and Evan Gwynne. Before joining the Australian army, he worked as a moulder and lived in Willaston. He also served 18 months in a Western Australian Militia.

Gwynne enlisted to join the army in Adelaide on the 24th of July 1916. When he enlisted, he weighed 145 lbs and stood 5' 6.5". He embarked on the 21st of September on board the HMAT A73 Commonwealth. His unit was the 5th Pioneer Battalion, Reinforcement 5 and was deployed in France along the Western Front. On the 13th of September 1917, he was wounded in action. He returned to Australia on board the HT 'Marathon' on the 6th of November 1918 and was honourably discharged on the 2nd of March 1919 due to strain of his back. He was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal and 1914/15 Star for his service.

After being discharged, he returned to Australia and his previous life. On the 19th of April 1924, he married Jeanie Howie at the Unley Methodist Church. On the 22nd of July 1946, at the age of 62, Gwynne passed away. He was buried at St Tomas Cemetery (Section 40 Grave 15), Enfield, New South Wales and is memorialized at the Gawler Council Gawler Men Who Answered the Call WW1 Roll of Honor memorial.
