Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Thomas Russell DAVIS and Margaret Ann nee WINNING

He had been apprenticed to Chapman & Co, Druitt St, Sydney.

Appears to have enlisted under Alexander HEDGE 2060 in WW1  (unable to located records under either name)

As there was some confusion as to his service record - it seems to have been confused with that of another soldier - JE Barrett, Deputy Commissioner of the Repatriation Department contacted Thomas Davis in 1933 for clarification of his service record. This is his reply:
"I first enlisted in August 1914, embarked on 19/8/14 and went to Rabual where I suffered from Malaria Fever. I returned to Australia as escort for Prisoners and was discharged about February 1915.
"I again enlisted on 15/3/15 and served in Egypt then Gallipoli where I remained until 1915 when I suffered the effects of a shell explosion and was sent to Hospital, then evacuated to Egypt and finally returned to Australia and discharged on 29/6/16. I did not have any service during the war other than that mentioned above."

Mr Barrett summarised his service:
First enlistment:
Enlisted Sydney 6/8/14.
Embarked Sydney per "Berrima" 19/8/14
proceeded to Rabaul.
Returned to Australia as escort for prisoners and discharged in February 1915.
Second enlistment:
Enlisted Sydney 15/3/15.
Embarked Sydney per "Kyaina"
Returned per "Themistocles".
Discharged Sydney 29/6/16 suffering with neurasthenia.

His Aust. Naval and Military Expedition enlistment has similar information to the WW1 enlistment:
