Robert Vincent REIS (‘Bob’) (Service Number 4176) was born in Lismore on 25th October 1891. His father had emigrated from Switzerland in 1853 and his mother’s father arrived in Australia from Denmark the same year. Bob was educated at St Carthage’s Convent School in Lismore. He joined the NSW Government Railways at Bathurst in 1910 as a cleaner, first step on the career path of an engineman. He was promoted to fireman in 1912. In 1913 he transferred to Eveleigh. In March 1915 he was released from duty to enlist in the AIF at Liverpool.
He was allotted initially to the 20th Battalion. He embarked from Sydney in June 1915 and landed in Egypt in July. He was transferred to the 4th Field Company of Engineers in August. In September 1915 he was sent to Gallipoli.
He suffered a penetrating bullet wound of the chest in the fighting there on 30th November 1915.
He was removed to the Hospital Ship ‘Dongala’' He died on 4th December 1915 and was buried at sea. He is remembered with honour on the Lone Pine Memorial.
A war pension was granted to his widowed mother.
