Frederick William PUTNEY was one of 10 children, 7 boys and 3 girls. He was the son of Michael Talbot PUTNEY (Baker & Cordial maker of Coolah, NSW) and Clara Eliza PUTNEY (nee Holland)
Frederick was a hairdresser at the time of enlistment and was married to Alice PUTNEY (nee Sweeney). they had a son Keith Talbot PUTNEY at the time he was killed in action on the Western Front on 12 Oct 1917. He is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery (Plot XVI, RowH, Grave No 9, Passchendale, Belguim.
His brother, 2861 Pte. Edward PUTNEY of the 1st Field Bakeery Australian Army Service Corps, was also a casualty of the war, dying from Pneumonia. Edward is buried at St.Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France

106 years ago today, on the 12th October 1917, 2nd Lieutenant Frederick William Putney, referred to as Frank or Fred, 36th Battalion (Reg No-2368), master hairdresser and tobacconist and Alderman (Carrington Municipal Council), from "Rosena", Robertson Street, Carrington, New South Wales, father of two (Keith Talbot, born 12.11.1911, died 1.8.1993, age 81 and Gordon Maitland, born 10.12.1915, died 21.1.1916, age 1 month), was Killed in Action by an enemy artillery shell at the 1st Battle of Passchendaele, age 36.
No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Coolah, New South Wales on the 15th September 1881 to Michael Talbot, died 25.9.1911, age 79 and Clara Eliza Putney nee Holland, mother of 8, died 18.2.1911, age 63; husband of Alice Jane Putney nee Swiney (married 1911, St. Peters, N.S.W., died 2.1.1916, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 38) of Robertson Street, Carrington, N.S.W., Frank enlisted on the 29th February 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.
Frank is resting at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Plot XVI Row H Grave 9.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Putney gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of Frank for God, King & Country.
