Frederick Westaway was born in Port Melbourne, Victoria on 2nd August, 1887 to parents John & Louisa Westaway (nee Harris). 

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) in Melbourne, Victoria on 16th September, 1914 as a 28 year old, Labourer.

Private Frederick Westaway, Service number 1200, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 22nd December, 1914 with the 7th Infantry Battalion, 1st Reinforcements.

He was taken on strength of 8th Battalion on 25th February, 1915.

On 25th April, 1915 Private Westaway was wounded at Gallipoli – severity not stated. He was admitted to Cottonera Hospital, Malta on 19th May, 1915 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to right foot. Private Westaway was transferred to Forrest Hospital at Malta on 15th July, 1915 then discharged back to Cottonera Hospital at Malta on 17th July, 1915. He embarked from Malta on Hospital Ship Asturias on 28th August, 1915 for England.

He was admitted to New End Military Hospital, Hampstead, London, England on 26th August, 1915 with Pleurisy (Note: date as per Casualty Form – Active Service).

Mrs L. Crush, 22 Percy Street, North Fitzroy, sister of Private Westaway, was advised by Base Records on 2nd September, 1915 that Private F. Westaway was seriously ill with Pleurisy at the Military Hospital, Hampstead, England.

 

Private Frederick Westaway died on 9th September, 1915 at Military Hospital, Hampstead, London, England from Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

He was buried in Hampstead Cemetery, London, England where 4 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
