Biography contributed by Steve Larkins

Ernest Mann

Ernest Mann was a grocer living in Warwick Queensland when he enlisted on 13 August 1917.  He was allocated to the 26th reinforcement draft for the 9th Infantry Battalion serving in the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Division.  The 3rd Brigade had led the landing force ashore at Gallipoli three and a half years earlier and so had a proud history of service throughout the Great War.

Ernest's introduction to front line service was however , delayed by a succession of illnesses that saw him in and out of hospital through the early part of 1918.

He eventually joined the Battalion a bare three weeks before the AIF was withdrawn from the line after the battle of Montbrehain on the 5th October  1918.  Ernests's exposure to combat consisted of the final phase of the breaching of the Hindenburg Line.
